Innovative Swallowing Therapy Restores Quality of Life
In 2004, Clinton “Buzz” McMannes had surgery at Lake Health to remove a grape-sized cancerous tumor in his throat. The tumor was on his epiglottis, the tissue that closes the airway to allow the safe swallowing of food and liquids. After 71 radiation treatments, Buzz was cancer free - but, the effects of radiation took its toll on Buzz. His epiglottis began to function poorly and wouldn’t close properly. Buzz couldn't eat comfortable, and his treasured golf game suffered because he wasn’t able to turn his head.
