Should I to go to an ER or urgent care?

In the first few minutes after an injury or medical crisis, seeking the right care is very important. These symptoms generally indicate an Emergency Department visit is in order:

  • A head injury
  • Broken bones
  • Poisoning or overdose
  • Unexplained shortness of breath, or not breathing
  • Uncontrollable bleeding
  • Seizures
  • Unconsciousness
  • Major burns
  • Heart attack symptoms
  • Slurred speech, blurred or double vision
  • Intense pain
  • Severe reactions to foods, medications or insect bites

Always call 911 for an ambulance in an emergency. First responders can start treatment in your home or on the way to the Emergency Department.

Urgent/quick care can provide a solution when you need prompt medical care for a non life-threatening condition or when your doctor's office is closed. Many of our Lake Health urgent/quick cares have evening and weekend hours. Symptoms appropriate for an urgent/quick care visit include:

  • Minor burns, skin rashes or simple lacerations
  • Ear infections
  • Strains and sprains
  • Minor illnesses
  • Needing flu shots and other vaccines
  • Sore throats
