A common heart rhythm problem
Atrial fibrillation, or A-Fib, occurs when the upper chambers of the heart beat very rapidly (300-600 beats per minute) and irregularly. When your heart beats inefficiently, not enough blood is pumped to the rest of your body. This can cause shortness of breath, fatigue and an increased risk of stroke.
Preventing the blood clots that lead to a stroke
Depending on your medical history, having A-Fib can cause blood clots to form. If a clot forms in an upper chamber of your heart, the clot could come loose and cause a stroke. That's why one of the most important treatments for A-Fib is a blood thinner, or anticoagulant, to prevent clots from forming.

Atrial fibrillation ablation
Cardiac catheter ablation is used to control irregular heart rhythms. During this procedure, a catheter is threaded up through the groin into the heart where it releases radiofrequency energy to scar the heart tissue causing the arrhythmia.
