Feeling dehydrated? Consuming drinks other than water might not be helping you.
We all know that we should drink water, but we get bored of it and then switch to a drink that probably isn’t the solution for hydration. Coffee and energy drinks are tasty, but they often contain caffeine which is a diuretic. This means it’s actually forcing water out of our bodies and dehydrating us. Soda, pop and juices often contain loads of sugar and drinking your carbs isn’t worth it! There are alternative options such as diet and no sugar sodas, and these are generally better for you from a caloric standpoint.
Nowadays, drinks like Pedialyte, Gatorade and Powerade are better alternatives because they have zero sugar options and contain electrolytes. Electrolytes include sodium, potassium and magnesium. These minerals help our body with essential functions such as muscle contraction, pH balance and nerve signaling.
How much water should you drink in a day?
Use this formula to stay hydrated: take your body weight in pounds and divide it by two. This is approximately how many fluid ounces of water/clear liquid you should drink in a day. Make this your goal and keep track of how much water you consume from a water bottle or jug.
