Valentine’s Day celebrates sweethearts – and sweet treats! Special treats can fit into a healthy diet, especially with a few simple swaps. Alyssa Tyler, MS, RD, LD, a registered dietitian at Lake Health, gives her favorite ideas for healthier Valentine’s Day treats to share with your loved ones.
Whether you like to make your own sweet treats or purchase them at the store, these lighter options are great to share at home or in the classroom:
- Chocolate-dipped pretzel rods. Dress them up with optional add-ons like chopped nuts, sea salt or sprinkles. You can even arrange them in a decorated mason jar as a cute “bouquet”.
- Chocolaty graham crackers. Dip reduced-fat graham crackers in dark chocolate for a sweet, simple treat.
- The classic fruit + chocolate combo. Chocolate-covered strawberries are always a favorite. If you’re not a chocolate fan, try fruit skewers sprinkled with dried coconut flakes or dipped in a low-fat yogurt.
- Pretty parfaits. Whip up a batch of homemade low-fat pudding and decorate with berries in the shape of a heart.
- Perfectly shareable cake. If you love cake, aim for a fluffy angel food cake topped with strawberries or raspberries.
