Dr. Aviv Ben-Meir and his staff at the Lake Health Bariatric Surgery Center in Northeast Ohio are often asked how much weight-loss surgery costs when a patient does not have insurance coverage for the operations.
If you have health insurance, check to determine if your plan covers bariatric surgery.
If you have coverage, our staff can help determine a range of what, if any, your cost will be based on your insurance plan’s deductible and out-of-pocket expenses.
If you don’t have health insurance, or if your plan doesn’t cover bariatric surgery, the self-pay cost for laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass and laparoscopic vertical sleeve gastrectomy is $22,000 at the Lake Health Bariatric Surgery Center. This rate is meant to account for the costs associated with surgery, including medical clearance and labs within 30 days of surgery, dietitian visits and surgical education, operation and hospital stay, surgeon, anesthesia and radiologist fee as well as inpatient medical consultants and 2-, 4- and 6-week post-operative follow-up visits. The self-pay fee also provides a 30-day insurance policy against potential complications directly related to your surgery.
While that might sound like a lot of money, when you think about the benefits you will gain from losing your excess weight, it is a small price to pay. Research* shows that Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery improves or eliminates the following conditions:
- Menstrual irregularities due to PCOS in 100% of patients**
- Acid reflux/GERD in 98% of patients**
- High cholesterol in 95% of patients**
- Obstructive sleep apnea in 87% of patients**
- Type 2 diabetes in 84% of patients**
- High blood pressure in 75% of patients**
- Depression in 47% of patients**
- Urinary stress incontinence in 44% of patients**
These improved health benefits are in addition to the psychological and social benefits of losing weight, such as feeling more confident and being more active.
Even so, if cost is a stumbling block on your weight-loss journey, we can refer you to Prosper, a loan company that offers low, fixed rates and will qualify you instantly. Use provider code 028506 (It will come up as Lake Hospital System, Inc., which is our legal name).
Some of our patients have also taken out a home equity loan or received assistance from family members to help pay for their surgery.
If you are interested in weight-loss surgery but aren’t sure how to pay for it, the first step is to take our online webinar to meet Dr. Ben-Meir and learn more about the surgery and your lifestyle changes. Then, we can figure out the rest from there.
