Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding (Lap-Band) Surgery
What is a Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding (Lap-Band) Surgery?
During a Lap-Band surgery, the surgeon places a silicone band around the top of your stomach to create a small pouch and to limit how much food can go into your stomach. This band is attached to a port that is placed under the skin. The port allows the band to be adjusted as needed to help you feel full with a small amount of food. This procedure is done laparoscopically using small incisions, meaning you may experience less pain and shorter recovery time.
What are the risks and benefits of a Lap-Band surgery?
Weight loss surgery can improve or resolve many health issues, such as type 2 diabetes, obstructive sleep apnea and high cholesterol. You’ll also gain the freedom to become an active, healthy participant in life rather than an onlooker. Every surgery poses possible risks and complications. Possible risks with a Lap-Band surgery include:
- Band slippage
- Band erosion
- Port/tubing issues
- Esophageal dilation.
