Midwifery Program
The midwifery program at Lake Health is designed to offer women more choices in both gynecologic and obstetrical care.
Midwives provide care to women throughout their lifespan – from puberty to menopause and beyond, with yearly wellness exams (including Pap smears), contraceptive counseling, care for infections and all aspects of care during pregnancy, birth and the postpartum period. They are board certified by the American Midwifery Certification Board and offer comprehensive family-centered maternity care for healthy, low-risk women and their infants.
All midwife births take place inside the Family Birthing Center at West Medical Center in Willoughby, where expectant mothers have access to other vital members of the obstetrical team, such as obstetricians, neonatal specialists and anesthesiologists. The midwives are present throughout labor and delivery to evaluate progress and provide emotional and physical support.
Midwives utilize methods such as walking, hydrotherapy (shower), birth balls, breathing techniques and massage to help women transition through the stages of labor and delivery.
