We see it every New Year: The mass crowds in the gym come and then slowly fade off throughout the first few months of the year. The excitement of the New Year gives us that energy to begin great lifelong goals, but then the motivation quickly goes away. We need to shift our mindset to recognize that change is a gradual process. We don’t want to overload ourselves with unattainable long-term goals.  Lake Health Integrative Medicine offers these tips on how to set goals you’ll actually stick with all year long:Â
This year, try to break a few of your large goals into smaller, attainable ones or you’ll risk repeating the same cycle as previous years and getting frustrated. Begin with a small goal you can reach, then add more when you get momentum.
Set “SMART” goals
A great tool for success is the “SMART” goal outline. All of our goals, no matter how big or small, should be written out as:
- Specific
- Measurable
- Attainable
- Relevant
- Timely.
An example could be adding more fiber into your diet by adding 2 tablespoons of chia seeds to your daily morning oatmeal. This is a very specific small goal that can help you achieve broad long-term goals such as weight loss or GI tract health.
