Thai “yoga” massage is the newest healing therapy offered at Lake Health Integrative Medicine. Commonly referred to as “assisted yoga,” Thai massage combines the benefits of a yoga class with the hands-on pressure of a massage.
It can relieve muscle and joint tension, increase flexibility and provide deep relaxation of the body and mind.
How it’s done
Thai massage is performed on a padded mat on the floor. Both client and practitioner wear comfortable clothing for ease of movement and flexibility. The client remains passive and relaxed while the practitioner gently positions him or her into various yoga postures. Traditional massage techniques are also used, but no lotions or oils are applied.
The one- to two-hour sessions are a sequence of slow-paced, repetitive movements blending acupressure, focused mind-body-spirit balance and stretching. In addition to yoga poses, the massage incorporates light-to-moderate pressure along energy lines and pressure points to align the body energies for optimal wellness.
What are the benefits of Thai massage?
This full body treatment improves circulation, boosts the immune system and balances the body energetically. Following a session, clients report feeling deeply relaxed and energized, with an overall sense of lightness. Lasting benefits may include better sleep, less muscle and joint pain, reduced stress and relief of chronic tension headaches.
“It’s rewarding for me to see clients experience positive results. Often they’re happy and excited because they finally have relief from an ongoing problem,” says Thai massage practitioner Jen Leyrer.
